Important First Steps In Drug Addiction Recovery


Drug addiction has a way of eroding your life and relationships. You may initially feel that using drugs is fun, okay, or something you can balance with the rest of your life. But eventually, you may realize that your addiction is doing more harm than good. At this point, most people realize that they need to start taking steps toward recovery. However, taking those first steps can be really hard, and you may not even know what those first steps should be. Here are some of the first steps you can and should take—along with some advice for each one.

Step 1: Tell Someone

Maybe some people in your life know that you're struggling with addiction, or perhaps this is something you have not shared with anyone. Even if you suspect some people know, there is benefit in sitting down and telling someone close to you that you're struggling with addiction and you're ready to seek recovery. This gives this person a chance to be there for you and support you on your journey. It is also therapeutic for you, as it takes your addiction out of the shadows and makes it something you're going to discuss more openly from this point onward.

Step 2: Make a List of Treatment Options

There are a lot of different approaches to treating addiction. You could get involved in a 12-step program and attend meetings a few days a week. You could go to an inpatient rehab program and spend a few weeks in sober living. Or, you could start attending outpatient recovery and therapy sessions. There's no one best option for everyone; it is more about what works for you. Make a list of your treatment options, and then list some pros and cons of each one. After a day or two of consideration, it should become clear which approach you favor.

Step 3: Start Treatment

Once you've decided on a treatment option, go for it. Call the rehabilitation center, make an appointment with a therapist, or attend that first 12-step meeting. It may be hard to convince yourself to start treatment, but rest assured that after you've taken this step and gone once, it will be easier to keep attending in the future.
